The JRunners International Marathon Minyan FAQ

Posted on Oct 30, 2013 by in Musings | 0 comments

Our office has been inundated with queries about this year’s International Marathon Minyan at the NYC Marathon, taking place this Sunday. We’ve collated the questions and answered them to the best of our ability. We present you with:

The JRunners International Marathon Minyan FAQ

Q. Is there a minyan this year?

A. Yes, for the 30th straight year.

Q. Where is it located?

A. At the same location it always has been. Check out the NYC Marathon runners guide for the exact location. They show it on the map of the Fort. With a magnifying glass you can see it on this map of the start, in the middle of everything, in the orange corral:

Q. What time is davening?

A. 7:15, 8:15, 9:15.

Q. How does tefillin and tallis drop-off work?

A. You will place your tefillin in a JRunners bag (provided by the club at the minyan). It will have a luggage tag upon which you will fill out your name, cell number and runner number. It will be transported to the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue at 8 West 70 Street. There you will see a banner on the façade. We will have a table set up with the tefillin and a volunteer.

Q. Is security going to give me a problem with my tallis and tefillin?

A. Security has been briefed on tefillin. We are in direct contact with the head of security and they passed out a note and pictures to their team showing what they look like. We’ve done everything we can to make sure this won’t present any problem.

Q. What if I don’t have my tefillin with me. Can I borrow?

A. You certainly can borrow. We are working on securing extra pairs of tefillin. But don’t rely on this.

Q. Will there be siddurim at the minyan?

A. Yes. Sefard and Ashkenaz.

Q. Ashkenaz/Sefard/Ari?

A. No Ari

Q. I am a chiyuv. Can I lead davening?

A. You can. But it is Rosh Chodesh. And most chiyuvim do not lead davening on Rosh Chodesh. However, aliyas and other honors at these services will be offered first to mourners, and then to anyone who ran in this year’s Boston Marathon.

Q. Will there be kosher food, hot coffee, etc., available?

A. We’ll have cold coffee sponsored by Real Beanz. Please feel free to let us know if you’d like to sponsor this minyan or aspects of the minyan.

Q. Can I donate to the amazing organization supporting this event?

A. Absolutely. Give us a call. Peter: 973-477-7908 or Saul: 917-299-3143.

Q. Does this organization put on any other running events?

A. Oh yes, we have one coming up on 12/1:

Q. I would love to run with other Members Of the Tribe. Who can I contact?

A. or just send an e-mail to our Yahoo! group. Subscribe here and introduce yourself in the forum:

Q. Have you answered all my questions?

A. I think we have! Good luck Sunday!
