June MCMLIX Steve Holmbraker is born in Middletown, NY.
April 1975 Martin Bodek is born in Brooklyn, NY. He hits the ground running.
July 1975 Steve runs his first (Paul Bunyan) marathon in Maine. The entry fee is $3.50.
August 1975 Saul Rosenblum is born in Brooklyn, NY. He loses his first race to Martin by four months.
February 1978 Matt Katz is born in Wickliffe, OH. Somehow he obtains a classic Brooklyn accent.
1981 Steven Friedman is born in Brooklyn, NY.
April 1995 Steve sets a (Boston) Marathon PR of 2:55:16.
November 1996 Martin runs his first (NYC) marathon, meets no one he knows, dreams of one day running with a group of likeminded fellows. Unbeknownst to him, one such likeminded fellow, Yossi Pancer, is also running his first marathon on the same course.
April 1998 Yossi Pancer runs the Boston Marathon in 2:39:43, setting the future JRunners marathon PR that stands to this day.
November 2005 Saul runs his first (NYC) marathon.
November 2008 Matt runs his first (NYC) marathon, bumps into Martin at the expo.
May 2009 Matt meets Saul Rosenblum in Prospect Park. They discuss mutual running friends while out on a run. 16 runners identified. Perhaps they will start a club.
June 2009 The group starts running together. The New York Heimishe Road Runners is the first name of the club. They make caps with “Heimishe Runners” emblazoned on the front.
August 2009 First race run together is Monster Classic in Monticello, NY. Matt begins talking of relay race, which is met with ridicule, but he persists.
September 2009 Matt meets Steven Friedman in Uman, Ukraine. The two happen to live down the block from each other. Matt finds Steven’s machzor in his own tallis bag. He gets in touch with Steven back home. They meet and chat about the running club and the relay idea. Matt introduces Saul to Steven.
October 2009 Matt, Steven, and Saul begin serious discussions and planning for a new club and the staging of a relay race from Brooklyn to the Catskills.
December 2009 JRunners, Inc. is incorporated. Martin senses the concordance in The Force.
February 2010 Steve Holmbraker, minding his own business, gets a call from JRunners at his home in the afternoon during a huge snowstorm. The co-founders meet with Steve immediately in a Monroe, NY pizza shop and shake hands on his directorship of the relay race, to be staged in the summer.
June 2010 Matt calls Martin thanks to a tip from Yossi Sharf, JRunners’ official MC and co-PR representative. Martin is sold on the concept immediately – his dreams having coming true – and remembers their bump-in at the expo two years ago. Legend has it that he hugged each of the co-founders when first meeting them. This is a myth, as he actually hugged them all after the first relay race.
June 2010 The NYRRC officially recognizes JRunners as a local running club. The Hope & Possibility 5M is the first race that allows JRunners to sign up with the official “JRUN” designation. Dovid Yehoshua Schachner takes gold.
July 2010 The 1st Annual JRunners Relay Race is a success. It benefits a mutual friend of the co-founders stricken with ALS.
October 2010 The first ever known Half-Marathon Minyan is staged by JRunners members at the Staten Island Half Marathon. Matt takes gold.
November 2010 JRunners inherits joint responsibility for the International Marathon Minyan – in the 28th year of its existence at the NYC Marathon – from its founder, retired Colonel Peter Berkowsky, USAF. Due to marketing efforts, an attendance record is set with 140 participants.
December 2010 The 1st Annual JRunners Health Awareness 5k is a success. Steven Lacob takes gold.
April 2011 The JRunners Run for Our Place 5.55k is a success. Mordechai Ovits takes gold.
May 2011 Yisroel Pupko is the first JRunner to earn Marathon Maniac Bronze Level status (research ongoing) after running 2 marathons (NJ and Run for the Red) within 16 days.
May 2011 The 1st Multi-annual Unsanctioned JRunners Half-Marathon is a success. Mordechai Ovits takes gold.
June 2011 36 JRunners flood the Celebrate Israel Run 4M, a record that still stands. Yossi Pancer takes gold.
August 2011 The first ever Ladies Only JRunners 5k is a success. Judith Sambol takes gold.
August 2011 The 2nd Annual JRunners Relay Race is a success. It benefits the Ohr Meir organization.
September 2011 Mordechai Ovits becomes JRunners’ first Half Ironman when he completes the Westchester Toughman.
November 2011 Several JRunners earn Marathon Maniac Bronze Level status for running 2 marathons (NYC and the inaugural Brooklyn) within 16 days. Joe Herman is the first known JRunner to officially apply for the designation.
December 2011 The 2nd Annual JRunners Health Awareness 5k+ Run is a success. Chris Decamps takes gold.
December 2011 Matt earns Gold Level Marathon Maniac status for running 4 marathons (Marine Corps, NYC, Brooklyn, Vegas) within 37 days.
March 2012 Yaakov Bressler wins the Our Place Run the Runway 5k.
April 2012 The JRunners Run for a Cause 5k is a success. Yaakov Bressler takes gold.
April 2012 Yisroel Pupko becomes JRunners’ first ultramarathoner, completing the Lake Waramaug 50k in 4:57:23.
June 2012 The 2nd Multi-annual Unsanctioned JRunners Half-Marathon is a success. Moshe Gamss takes gold.
July 2012 Yaakov Bressler completes the Lake Placid Ironman, joining Chaim Backman in the pantheon of JRunners Ironmen.
July 2012 Martin is named official JRunners Beat Reporter by the Vos Iz Neias news organization. His press credentials finally provide him with a secret identity.
August 2012 The 3rd Annual JRunners Relay Race is a success. It benefits Kids of Courage. Martin begins pestering all participants for write-ups of their race experience.
August 2012 Joe Herman becomes JRunners’ second Half Ironman when he completes the REV3 Maine.
August 2012 Mark Izhak becomes JRunners’ third Half Ironman when he completes the Pocono Mountains 70.3.
September 2012 Mordechai Ovits completes his second Half Ironman at Toughman, dropping the JRunners record to 5:37:35. He is joined by Michael Weber, Michael Wilhelm, Yisroel Pupko, Joey Dweck, and Shlomo Rosenzweig. They are the first JRunners sextet to take the field at a Half Ironman.
October 2012 The Unsanctioned JRunners Quad-Counties 50k Ultramarathon is a success. Matt Katz takes gold.
November 2012 Mark Izhak completes the Arizona Ironman, joining Chaim Backman and Yaakov Bressler in the vaunted hall of JRunners Ironmen.
December 2012 The JRunners run for Sea Gate 5k is a success, raising $55,000 for the Hurricane Sandy-damaged community. Steven Rosenbaum takes gold.
March 2013 Yisroel Pupko completes his second 50k, dropping the JRunners record to 4:42:17. He is joined by Frank Deleo and Michael Wilhelm. They are the first JRunners triumvirate to take the field at an ultra.
March 2013 The 3rd Multiannual Unsanctioned JRunners Half Marathon is a success. Yaakov Bressler takes gold.
April 2013 Four members of the JRunners family are on the course of the Boston Marathon when terror strikes. All four are unharmed and return to their families safely.
April 2013 The JRun for Boston AKA The 4th Multiannual Unsanctioned JRunners Half Marathon is a success. Yaakov Bressler takes gold.
June 2013 Yaakov Bressler completes his first Half Ironman at the Syracuse 70.3, bringing the number of JRunners Half Ironmen to nine.
June 2013 At the Mighty Moss Half Iron, Shlomo Rosenzweig completes his second Half Ironman and Mordechai Ovits becomes JRunners’ first three-peat Half Ironman.
August 2013 The 4th Annual JRunners Relay Race is a success.
September 2013 The Unsanctioned JRunners Quad-Counties 55k Ultramarathon is a success. Matt Katz takes gold.
October 2013 Elik Hirsch is the first JRunner to earn a belt buckle when he completes the Tesla Hertz 100-mile Train Run.
November 2013 6 of the 27 runners who participate in the first 3 Brooklyn Marathons are JRunners.
November 2013 Yitzy Sontag achieves Iridium Level Marathon Maniac Status for running 4 marathons (Marine Corps, NYC, Harrisburg, Brooklyn) within 23 days.
December 2013 The 3rd Annual JRunners Health Awareness 5k is a success. Shmuel Gross and Connie Fried take gold.
July 2013 54 Runners, 54 Stories: The Tale of the 2012 200k JRunners Relay Race is published. It goes on to become Martin’s bestselling book.
July 2013 Yaakov Bressler completes his 2nd Ironman, becoming the first JRunner to complete more than one.
March 2014 The 1st Unsanctioned JRunners Synchronized Virtual Half Marathon is a success. Joel Mandel takes gold.
May 2014 Steven Rosenbaum wins the Rubin Run 5k.
May 2014 Adam Orlow wins the L’Chaim 5k.
June 2014 Efraim Shaw wins the Tenafly 5k.
June 2014 The Father’s Day Half AKA The 2nd Attempt at The 6th Multiannual Unsanctioned JRunners Half Marathon is a success. Yossi Pancer takes gold.
June 2014 Elik Hirsch earns his 2nd belt buckle when he completes The Great New York 100 Mile Running Exposition.
July 2014 The (2nd) JRunners Virtual Synchronized Half Marathon to #RememberOurBoys is a success. 28 runners in several states, countries, and Israeli neighborhoods participate. Joel Mandel takes gold.
August 2014 The 5th Annual JRunners Relay Race is a success. Women join the fold on a truncated Brooklyn to Monsey course that is 54.3 miles long. Two adventurers, Matt Katz and Yisroel Pupko, run a modified course totaling 46.8 miles, all by themselves.
August 2014 Efraim Shaw wins the Peasantman Half Ironman, and reduces the JRunners record by 59 minutes to a world class 4:38:28.
September 2014 Efraim Shaw places 2nd in the Rev3 Half Ironman, while lowering the JRunners record to 4:20:12.
October 2014 Efraim Shaw wins the Toga Duathlon.
November 2014 JRunners co-hosts the International NYC Marathon Minyan for the 5th time, and places 30 of its runners in the field. Scott Smith nets JRunners an NYRR club point, due to his fast run and Master status.
November 2014 Yaakov Bressler wins the Run for Our Place 5k.
November 2014 Yisroel Pupko wins the Festival of Lights 5k.
November 2014 6 of the 21 runners who participate in the first 4 Brooklyn Marathons are JRunners.
December 2014 The 5th Annual JRunners Health Awareness 5k is a success. Efraim Shaw and Connie Fried take gold. Connie is JRunners’ first ever repeat champion.
January 2015 Elik Hirsch earns his 3rd belt buckle when he completes The Beast of Burden 100-Miler in eyeball-freezing (no, literally!) weather.
February 2015 The Inaugural Running of the Bull Challenge & Half Marathon, Powered by JRunners is a success. Joel Mandel takes gold.
March 2015 Steven Rosenbaum wins the HOD Society 5k.
March 2015 Rebecca Schwartz is the first ever JRunners marathon winner, claiming victory at the Two Rivers Marathon in PA.
April 2015 Martin Bodek runs 40 miles around Brooklyn on his 40th birthday. 17 others join for various stretches. Elik Hirsch and Adam Orlow go the full distance as well.
May 2015 Steven Lacob wins the Nutley Chamber of Commerce 5k.
May 2015 Matt Katz becomes the second ever JRunners marathon winner, taking first at the Oh Boy Marathon in CT.
May 2015 18 days later, Matt Katz becomes the first two-time JRunners marathon winner, with a triumph at the Old Colony Marathon in MA.
June 2015 Efraim Shaw wins the 6/3 edition of the Al Goldstein 5k.
June 2015 The Terry Fox Yahrzeit Half AKA the 4th Annual Unsanctioned JRunners Prospect Park Half Marathon is a success. Joel Mandel and Dini Levin take gold.
June 2015 David Colman becomes the 4th JRunner to claim the status of Ironman with a sparkling debut at the Atlantic City Challenge.
